If you’ve ever walked midway through Forsyth Park, you may have noticed a few subtle differences in Savannah’s look and feel: fewer businesses, no squares, and way more houses. This shift in scenery only means that you’ve exited the Historic District and have entered Savannah’s Victorian District – a predominately residential section of Savannah that holds great history, architecture, and character.

The district is named after the predominately Victorian style houses within the neighborhood. This style is characterized as elaborate two-story homes with bay windows and decorative trim. The houses are often tall and narrow and have towers or turrets.

The district is considered Savannah’s first suburb – it was designed without squares to accommodate the invention of the streetcar.

Building restoration began in the late 1960’s. Today, the district is mostly residential, housing a mix of locals, students, and professionals.

The Victorian District stretches about 50 blocks and is a hodgepodge of homes with different colors, shapes, and characteristics – all which mesh together to form a uniform style and feel. The diverse personality of the homes mirror the diverse personalities of the people that live there.

These charming houses also make for quaint businesses, bed & breakfasts, gallery spaces, and more. It isn’t uncommon to spot a small business within the sea of homes. Savannah favorites like Brighter Day Natural Foods, Catherine Ward House Inn, and the Park Avenue Manor are all located in the Victorian District.
